Healthy Office Snacks

Feeling peckish? We beat the 4pm slump with these three handy alternatives to snack foods to keep at your desk.

There never seems to be enough time in the workday, let alone time for thinking about healthy snacking when it comes to the mid-afternoon cravings. It’s all too easy to ruin any virtuous lunch decisions you may have made earlier in the midst of a hard and fast energy hit before dinner. Forget reaching for the muesli-bar, or worse yet, nipping to the café next door for a little pick-me-up in the form of a muffin and instead, come prepared. An extra five minutes in the morning and instead of filling yourself up with copious amounts of refined sugar snacks, you can keep your energy levels, your waistline down and the afternoon hunger pangs at bay with some healthy snacks. Our new favourite snack foods are not only guilt free, but yummy too and we promise there won’t be a sugar crash in sight!

Baked Kale Chips

Ok, we know what your thinking here but there is good reason kale is the new buzz food when it comes to healthy snacks. This iron-rich super food is filled with antioxidents and has zero fat. Before leaving for work in the morning, wash two bunches of fresh kale and toss with 2 tbsps of olive oil. Spread on a baking sheet and salt lightly. Bake for around 10 minutes or until slightly golden around the edges and voila! Your very own healthy bagel crisps.

Easy avocado

Guacamole lovers listen up! Avocados are chocka full of healthy omega fats and are very good at keeping hunger at bay – even without the corn chips! Take half an avocado and mix with a tsp of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon and some sea salt. This delicious snack will tie you over until dinner and you’ll be surprised how satisfying it is even without the carbs to match.

Popcorn

When undressed from its butter laden, jumbo-sized movie disguise, popcorn is in fact one of the healthiest snack choices around! Low in calories, and full of whole grains, the trick with popcorn comes down to how it’s prepared.
Forget the pre-packaged, store bought, heavily processed popcorn and opt for a little air-popped natural variety of your own. Season with a little salt and olive oil or a sprinkle of coconut if you prefer a sweeter snack.
